Performance
“might roses be your bed” follows up on a performance that Gürtler gave at the Kasseler Kunstverein in 1984. He stood confined in an upright box made of slats, turning around and around, always hitting the walls of the box, while a singer sat on the box singing songs from Schubert's “Winterreise” . “Journeying” is the main theme of the works of the artist: “Understanding life as a journey along different consecutive routes gives our existence a dimension which exceeds and surpasses the experience of a single moment. The idea that roses might make up our final bed may accompany us as a sweet hope on this journey”, says the artist on the subject of his works.
At the Kunstvereinsheim the journey will lead us along a table on which a modified nautical chart is laid out. The visitor embarks upon an imaginary journey along the Cyclades and can stop at a number of stations at which he can fortify himself for the trip with sweet dishes such as sand cake castles or marzipan dolphins. The sojourner is accompanied musically by a sample of works compiled by the artists and musicians Martin M. Kreijci and Sabastian Giussani from Munich. The sample is drawn from recordings of Mercan Dede, Dolphins, Stranglers, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Tom Waits and others.
Christian Gürtler, born in Wolnzach in 1954, studied with Prof. Horst Sauerbruch and Prof. Gerd Dengler at the Academy of the Fine Arts in Munich. Christian Gürtler lives and works in Munich.
