“How are you? I am fine, considering the circumstances. Since my last letter things have improved. […] Like the time when I absolutely wanted to build a bunker from where I could watch the neighbours. I wanted to build it in the back by the fence, where there was a slight hill, and where it was sheltered. I would have had a great view from there. […] You always had to laugh at my plans and said it would be better for me to play with my friends than to lose myself in my dreams […]”. This is how r.&.r. (R. H. Nijdam and Riekus), artist duo from the Netherlands, begin their poetic letter “Dear Father, dear Mother”. This personal statement of the duo inspired the work which will be presented at the Kunstvereinsheim. The beginning of the letter, typed out by a secretary, will be seen as a short film. After but a few sentences the typing stops in the middle of a sentence. The viewer sees the cursor flashing. How does the letter continue? This is illustrated by the objects arranged in the room (“The Pisser II”, “Kartoffeltisch”) that “tell” the story through their installation.
The artist duo r.&.r. was initiated in 2005 by R. H. Nijdam and Riekus from the Netherlands.
R. H. Nijdam, born in Amsterdam in 1973, studied architecture at the Technical University in Delft.
Riekus, born in Roosendaal in 1973, studied art at the Kunsthochschule Kassel under the supervision of Rolf Lobeck.
R. H. Nijdam and Riekus live and work in Rotterdam and Roosendaal, the Netherlands.
