Net art
"My net art tries to express the essence of the Internet: information.
Strip away the interactivity, the graphics, the design, the photos, the
illustrations, the banners, the colours, the fonts and the rest, and what‘s
left? The text." This is how Young-Hae Chang, member of the Korean-American
duo YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES (Young-hae Chang/Marc Voge) describes
the works they call "web pieces."
These web pieces consist exclusively of her own partly ironical, partly
poetical texts and stories, which they combine with sound elements, mainly
jazz music. Despite the simple appearance of the flash-animated pieces,
suspense is created - by the music in the background and by the countdown
before the web pieces actually begin, reminiscent of the films of by-gone
days or of rocket launchings. The viewer is fascinated by the works and
eager to absorb their message. The texts deal with, for example, a man
who dies and is born again as a stick, or a Korean cleaning lady who is
in actual fact a French philosopher, or an evening in a brothel with Samuel
Beckett …
While her works are normally to be seen online at www.yhchang.com, YOUNG-HAE
CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES convert their piece "DAS ERWACHEN DER MONGOLIDEN"
into an installation. This Kafkaesque short story is about a young white
man who wakes up one day as an Asian in Seoul.
