"Schutzräume"

Photography

„Caves have always been places of refuge for mankind. They provide shelter from rain, wind, and wild animals. People who live and work in a place sheltered from rain and wild animals have other problems, though: they are subject to more subtle fears and constraints which are just as threatening and cannot be prevented by stone walls. They are reason enough for people to want to hide from them now and then. Hide and seek shelter in a place of one's own, free from the constraints of time and space, full of peace and warmth.” This is what the photographer Martin Richter has to say about his work “Schutzräume” created on the occasion of his nomination for the "Körber-Foto-Award" in 2007.

The series of photographs exhibited at the Kunstvereinsheim shows rooms in offices and other functional buildings in which Richter has built improvised caves using many different materials. The exhibition is complemented by a cave which will be built and photographed by Richter on location at the Kunstvereinsheim. The work was inspired by constructions built by children at play, and, as Richter himself says, “[…] by the feeling of precariousness and transience that befalls not only me in today's day and age.”

Martin Richter, born in 1974, is studying photography at the Kunsthochschule Kassel and the Fachhochschule Bielefeld. He lives and works in Hamburg.
